Who We Are

We teach and publish writing by people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, offering audiences a new way to understand this rich form of human diversity—both in practice and in print.

Change the Narrative

Our writers don’t just tell stories—they shift perspectives.
Students share their voices with audiences across time and place, in person and in print. And those voices make an impact: 85% of listeners say Cow Tipping authors change their fundamental view of disability.

That includes our own teaching fellows—many of them college students—who leave the program with not just experience, but a new understanding of inclusion. Several have gone on to full-time work in this field, carrying those lessons forward.

Teach & Learn

We guide adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities through inclusive, trauma-aware classes that center their voices first.

Led by educators—many from the disability and neurodiverse community—our approach uses adaptable methods like gentle prompts, oral storytelling, transcription, and multi-genre exploration.

The goal isn’t correction. It’s expression. Every class is a space where students shape their own stories, and where teaching becomes a shared act of creativity, trust, and listening.

Publish & Perform

Our students don’t just write—they become published authors.

More than 400 of our writers have seen their words printed, bound, and shared as real books with their names on the cover. These works are performed at readings, exhibited in galleries, and taught in classrooms—bringing bold new voices into spaces that rarely include them.

Publication isn’t a reward. It’s the next step in the creative process—where authors take the mic, claim their space, and show the world what they have to say.

Rob Bergerson
When Rob Bergerson sat down to write poetry for the first time, he drew on things that inspired him. He wrote about his girlfriend. He wrote about sports. He wrote about travel—he loves travel.“I’ve been to California, Europe, Mexico, Sweden—all over the place. I’ve been everywhere,” he said.

Bergerson was a first-time poet, but a natural documentarian. Sometimes he grabs his camera and videotapes whatever’s happening in his life: sometimes it’s a thunderstorm, sometimes it’s the aftermath of a national tragedy, like the recent shooting in Orlando, Fla.
